Gastric lap band surgery is a modern form of surgery and is much safer, with fewer complications than the previously used forms of open gastric bypass surgery. Nevertheless it also carries quite a number of risks, most of them specific to this form of surgery. There are still the other general risks that are there in any form of surgery that involves overweight.

Obviously the most serious risk is that of death, either during or shortly after the surgery, and which is directly related to the surgery. So far very few deaths have been reported, since although this form of surgery has been there for about 12 years, it has been licensed for use in very few countries. The risk stands at about 1% currently.

Another main risk associated with lap band is the gastric perforation. This is the occurrence of a tear in stomach wall, and happens in about 1% of the surgeries done.
